Off the Shoulder Tops - A Fall Fashion Must Have

Tina, here.

Can we wear off-the-shoulder dresses and tops, one of my fall fashion must-haves, when the temperatures drop? Yes. Yes we can. Here's why and here's how.

Why? We must keep baring our shoulders, I'm convinced, because we all have such beautiful shoulders. And the world needs to appreciate them. And they are wonderful distractions from under eye bags or whatever ails you at the moment. (And I promise you that no one is looking at your neck or your bags or your forehead; your true and dear friends are not the kind to mind a life well-lived that is revealed in our smiles and our tears. Just had to say that, my friends.) But shoulders are like the nape of the neck or the wrist or ankle - just the slightest bit daring and still so elegant and lovely when you bare them.

But how? Come cool days and nights, how can we bare our shoulders and not freeze? Simple.

1. Add a pashmina.

I keep pashminas on hand in all neutrals tones from browns and caramels and dove grey and charcoal and ivory and blush and so on, and I am rarely without one. They fit so well in your handbag, and make great wraps on a cool airplane (which I've said a million times, but it bears repeating). I look for a little bit of wool or cashmere for warmth. Check these out.

You can also add a jacket for your to and fro, and when you're inside, just take it off or drape it over your shoulders, and a bit of your clavicle will still show.

2. Choose a heavier fabric that will keep you warm. Set aside your summery voiles, chiffons and eyelets.

So in Nashville there's not just tons of opportunity to wear a leather off-the-shoulder top like this, but fall it is! Leather breathes, but it's heavy. So the window to wear this top is now. Other great transition fabrics are lightweight cashmere, denim and heavier cottons. I've just added more off the shoulder tops to our collection, and if you're a Style Vault Insider (and of course also you Complete Insiders), you can shop them!

I'll pair off the shoulder tops with jeans all the time to get that high/low effect of something elegant and something a bit tough. Faded jeans are huge this season, and so are black jeans.

If your off-the-shoulder top is a lightweight fabric you wore all summer, try pairing it with a wintry fabric like velvet.

3. Or you can work with a one shoulder, cold shoulder or an asymmetrical neckline.

This cotton tee is a cross between a boat neck, funnel neck and one shoulder. The point is it's baring some shoulder, but not too, too breezy.

This top is kinda the same idea, but certainly an asymmetrical neckline which can be so flattering if you're wanting to distract from a bustline or anything else, really.

During the day, I'll wear the shoulders up a little higher, and at night, I'll go for the one shoulder look by just nudging down one side off my shoulder.

So as long as your off-the-shoulder tops don't look like you should be sitting on a pool terrace sipping lemonade, keep wearing them this fall! And you can shop my collection of must-have off-the-shoulder and cold shoulder tops inside the Vault. Check out the 5 day free trial!
