I'm Going To Italy, Here's What I'm Packing
Tina, here.
Ahhhh, Italia. Click here for background music.
If you've had us pack for you, you know we mean business. No extraneous shoes (so heavy and cumbersome); a couple bottoms and twice as many tops; wear the only jewelry you're taking on the plane; add a pashmina and a clutch and you're done. And all in one carry-one, if at all possible.
This is my carry-on, but mine is small enough to fit in the overhead bin, so I can avoid checking luggage. image via PotteryBarn (no longer available). Here is an excellent carry-on:
What To Pack For A Trip To Europe
Here's my packing list for a week in Italy that includes hiking between the villages of Cinque Terre, lounging on the Amalfi Coast, gallery and museum-hopping in Florence, and gondola riding in Venice. I know, poor me.
One Carry-on and One Backpack
I like a black nylon backpack for my everyday bag, as unfashionable as it may be. It holds any trinkets I pick up along the way, a bottle of water, and it's rain and pick-pocket-proof.
One Clutch
This Chanel Wallet-on-a-Chain is my evening clutch. A bit more chic for when you want to blend in instead of look like a tourist when taking in a divine meal and glass of wine with the locals. Because this one is pre-owned, there is limited availability.
White Jeans
White jeans are the foundation of my travel wardrobe. And a stain stick.
Tank Tops
I add a black and a grey tank, that I can layer under sweaters or jackets.
These tanks come in many colors, including black, white and stardust (shown).
Black Knit Pencil Skirt
I love a black knit skirt that I can dress down during the day, and dress up at night with wedges, a pashmina and my Chanel clutch.
LBD, or a Knit Dress
I always try to include a packable black dress.
White Denim Jacket
Layers are necessary for cold museums and pop-up showers that lower the temp - don't shy away from a white denim jacket. It can be bleached when you get home. Plus you've got your stain stick in your backpack.
Pashmina
To see how to wear a pashmina without its wearing you, I'm showing you how here!
Here's my pop of color: a teal pashmina. Ideal for the plane, and evening dinners.
Statement Jewelry Piece
I pick one jewelry theme and wear it the whole trip. This trip: Navajo turquoise cuff (vintage). This one I found on 1stdibs, and here's another similar one, available here.
Swimsuit
I'm packing a suit for the Italian Riviera. My heart is beating faster. image via Target, similar available here at Target (bottoms here), and here for a plus-size swimsuit.
Leather Flip-Flops
Flip flops are my slippers for the plane and the hotel room, and I'll wear them to the beach. image via Gap. Similar here.
Wedges
A wedge is at once comfy and dressy, and oh so much better than ugly travel shoes.
Stuart Weitzman Jean wedge. You want the color "Adobe", but I have both black patent and "Adobe."
And now for a curveball...
Pink Sneakers
I will be wearing hot pink puma's with my white jeans during the day. I believe if you go funky with your comfort shoes, they aren't so ugly.
Socks (for the plane and hotels)
Socks, for the plane and hotel rooms. I like the white ones and black for under boots.
Earbuds
Ive skimped on earbuds before and regretted it. This is not the time to do that.
And there you have it. My Italian packing job. I'll let you know how it goes, and if I throw any extras in at the last-minute, because that always happens.
