1. Mid-rinse Jeans
I've been wearing my mid-rinse jeans for a few weeks now. I even wore them on TV with a really nice jacket and heels. A mid-rinse just feels right this time of year. Your dark rinse jeans that have faded are probably not what I'm talking about, unless they are genuine vintage Levi's or Wranglers. New denim gets stripey as it fades, not like the old denim that gave you a great all-over shade of the prettiest pale blue.

I've been playing with cuffing my jeans (mainly because these can get long). Shop the coolest pair of faded rinse girlfriend jeans inside the September Vault, Style Notes section.

Close-up of where to cuff your skinny jeans. I like the look with flats. Make sure you show a teeny bit of ankle, but don't let it creep up into evil capri territory. (Shop some animal print flats inside the September Style Vault and the bonus issue on Perfect Fall Shoes.)

Chambray on denim. Easier than denim on denim, unless you know what you're doing. You could also pair chambray with dark rinse jeans, too.
3. Leather Skirt
You have to have a leather skirt. It's like a modern wardrobe requirement. A modern classic that probably needs updating. Faux is absolutely fine, and more affordable. But make sure it's not shiny or super-thin. If you have one and you like the leather, but it's sister-wives long (because you've had it for umpteen years), take it to a leather person to cut it off and shape it into a pencil skirt. Tapering it at the sides is important.

I wear mine early in the season with a chambray shirt. You can wear it with a t-shirt, too. I scoured my sources and turned up the softest, coolest leather pencil skirt for you in the September Vault. It's a little longer than this one, and comes in petite, too.

Try the tie. If you don't like to tuck, it's a great way to still get a pulled-together look without leaving out a shirttail.
4. Suede Jacket
Suede is huge this season. And again, faux is fine. It's called ultra-suede (great marketing). Make sure it looks and feels like real suede, though. And fits. Oversized suede and leather is yucky.

I have on a t-shirt and a plain old skirt. The jacket is that ubiquitous 3rd piece every outfit needs. And branch out from black! Shop a great suede jacket in the Style Notes of the September Vault.
5. Ankle Boots
Remember when everyone was wearing riding boots? Now it's ankle boots. Actually both. Having a pair of both makes sense. Especially during transition seasons like now. Wear your ankle boots with white jeans, faded jeans, dark rinse jeans. But with dresses and skirts? As I've said before, not unless you're the subject of a street style blog and know how to do it.

If your jeans graaze the top of the boots, that's great. No rolling or cuffing required. And you don't have to wear socks. I like the look better without them. Shop my best ankle boots in bonus issue of the September Vault, A Perfect Fall Shoe Wardrobe.

And when your jeans are a little longer, you can casually roll the jeans. You want it to look unstudied. Not perfect, and definitely not perfectly matching.
