I have recently acquired a new hat of such ferocity that it has been running my whole life for me. I wake up in the morning thinking, who shall I wear my hat at today?

I bought a matador hat.

I've wanted one ever since, well I don't know, forever. I have all these alter-egos. Girl on safari. Cowgirl on a ranch. Equestrienne in the Cotswolds. And you're about to meet another one. Spanish señorita tending her hacienda. Is this TMI? Should I be embarrassed?

I love it when something fresh in fashion is just around the corner. Don't you? Last fall it was definitely the Victorian/Librarian look with ruffles, florals, long skirts, and lots of subdued colors. I think this summer (and fall) we'll see the next rendition of that look with a Spanish influence and Latin style. Think more ruffles, big flounces and full skirts. More embroidery. Brighter colors.

So I'm interpreting Spanish style for you in a way us everyday girls can channel our inner señora.

I haven't embraced bright color yet. Not saying I won't dabble, but I love a good ivory and black ensemble. It can make as strong a statement as vivid color can.

Ruffles are a must. But not too many, Señoritas. We're not little girls in pigtails and we aren't flamenco dancers.

The matador hat plays a big role in achieving Spanish style. If you want mine, I got it at Free People here (they call it a boater, but a matador hat has a flat top and low bowl).

Big gold hoops complete the look.

Since I'm making two Spanish-style references, with my blouse and hat, I'm going subtle with my pants and shoes.

Side note - take a look at how those pockets pucker. Not flattering.

We always recommend having your side slit pocket seams sewn closed, so you don't get wide hip syndrome from bulging pockets.

For a more relaxed Spanish influence summer outfit, I like white-on-white but with lots of texture.

You get that texture and interest with the straw matador hat and the embroidered white blouse, and the metallic espadrilles.

If you don't do white, you could do any neutral look that's a tone-on-tone. The supporting accessories are what make the outfit: a matador hat, embroidery and espadrilles.

Espadrilles are definitely a must, as they are vey closely associated with Spanish style and that "at the seaside" romanticism. I like these espadrilles.
