What To Wear For Holiday Cheer

Tina, here.

I vividly remember my Gannie showing up at our house on Christmas Eve in her fancy fur coat and leather gloves, her bright red lipstick, and smelling like a thousand roses and all my little girl dreams of what it meant to be elegant and beautiful. It matters that we "dress" for the holiday! And honor the season with cheerful outfits that provide the colorful backdrop for the special memories we make. It's been a bit since I've posted and what better time to share a new post with you than at Christmas, when we are all wondering what to wear and how to create yet another outfit for a holiday party. Here are some ideas, using what you may already have in your closet, and if you don't, sources for where to snag the missing pieces!

If you've been following me for any length of time you know I ADORE Blackwatch Plaid, and am constantly on the hunt for a skirt, a pair of pants, scarf, pillow, blanket, ribbon, I'll take anything. The great thing about blackwatch plaid is it settles the question once for all, can you wear navy and black together? But of course you can! So the next question is, what do you wear with blackwatch plaid? Navy or black, naturally, but you can also pair a crisp white shirt or sweater with pants or a skirt. I also wear my blackwatch plaid flannel shirt this time of year with black jeans or white cords. Shoes? For dressy pants or a dress, I prefer black patent or navy suede shoes. Sidenote: I have not been wearing heels much at all, have you? But when I have, I am reminded how uncomfortable they are!! I'm wearing an ooooold pair of Jimmy Choos, navy suede, in these photos and I have to say, out of all the heels I've had on in the past year or so, these are still the most comfortable. I don't know if my feet are just made for JC's, or if they truly are that good, but I find, and really always have, that Jimmy Choo heels are easier to wear than Manolo's or Stuart Weitzman or Louboutins or Edelman or any number of expensive or "cheap" heels. Back to the program.

Let's talk about toppers. First, no puffy jackets allowed when you're going to a party (unless it's velvet). If you don't have a warm coat, wear a big, warm pashmina or wool poncho over your shoulders. You can also take that blazer from the black (or navy) suit you never wear and use it as a topper.

For a more casual look, pair your blackwatch plaid with black jeans or even blue velvet jeans, and try black ankle boots or flats, or, paired with ivory cords, try sand-colored ankle boots or flats
