My Favorite Transition Piece: The Denim Jacket

Tina, here.

This post has been one of our most popular, so we're republishing it with all new links! Hope you enjoy!

The denim jacket is one of the fashion world's most useful pieces.

My Favorite Transition Piece: The Denim Jacket

We are always preaching the good sense of buying versatile clothes that you can wear in multiple seasons, to many types of occasions. And the denim jacket is one of these pieces for sure (both white and dark rinses). I know you can't wait to pull out yours.

Hang on there cowgirls. There are two rules for your denim jacket.

1. It must be fitted. Like tight when you put it on (it’ll stretch out). I don't really like the oversized and "relaxed" denim jackets because they look sloppy to me, and are hard to wear over delicate summer dresses to make them fall-appropriate.

2. Your Harold’s denim jacket from 10 years ago is not working for you any longer. Neither is your Gap one from 10 years ago. The modern denim jacket is a shrunken fit and doesn’t have any extraneous pockets, epaulets or other embellishments. And it definitely does not have embroidered flowers on it. It's simple.

Here's how to wear the right denim jacket this fall to transition your summer pieces.

1. First swap out your white one for a dark rinse or faded rinse denim jacket.

In summertime, a white denim jacket will look great with most of your dresses. Come fall, adding a dark rinse denim jacket makes it feel more appropriate for the season.

2. Wear a dark rinse denim jacket over your summer sundresses to extend their life a bit longer.

Summer on the left. Fall on the right. You need this denim jacket. It's perfect.

I changed the accessories as well. I added a long string of brown pearls and switched from a light wedge to a brown suede wedge.

 2. Your summer skirts still look good with a dark rinse denim jacket.

Yes, you can keep wearing your white denim skirt into early fall if your supporting players are right: a brown wedge or flat, and of course the dark rinse denim jacket. I think this would be too heavy with white jeans, but looks great with the skirt.

I've had this caramel color crochet skirt for a while, and usually wear it with a white tee. In fall, I just add a denim jacket. A Chambray Shirt or denim shirt would also work.

The jacket needs to hit right about at your hip bones, not any higher and not any lower. Or it's just wrong.

3. Your LBD you've been wearing all summer? Now add a denim jacket.

The LBD ranks up there in usefulness and versatility with the denim jacket. Actually, it scores higher because it literally can go from a football game with boots to a holiday party with sparkly accessories.

Notice I swapped shoes, too, to a more fallish heel. I'm wearing animal print heels.

4. A faded rinse denim jacket is equally as useful, and so cool, in that western glam way.

Do you want to know how many denim jackets I have? Three. White, faded and dark rinse. You thought you had me, didn't you? Thought I was going to reveal I had like 14 of them, didn't you? I do show restraint in some areas of my life.

The great thing about denim jackets is that they travel well. They are virtually indestructible, which makes them great for travel and for carrying around with you.

5. MAJOR addendum to the 2-point rule section above: You HAVE to cuff the sleeves of your denim jacket. It's required.

Men roll their sleeves. Women cuff our sleeves. Less bulk. More finished.
