An Easy and Fabulous Fall Weekend Wardobe

Tina, here.

Saturday morning football league games, kids' birthday parties, taking friends visiting from out of town to your favorite shops, Saturday night dinner, Sunday morning service and brunch. So many outfit changes in 48 hours. It's so easy for men. Chinos and a button down and loafers. Works for every one of these categories. Women? We need a different pair of shoes for each of these categories, not to mention the different jewelry and jackets and hairdos. So I'm breaking down for you what to wear on a fall weekend so you have one less thing to think about while you're living your fabulous life.

1. Saturday Morning Football Game

The mornings are cool and fields may be wet and muddy. It's early and you're feeding a crowd and hunting for all the gear strewn about your house. You need an easy go-to game outfit, and it needs to be made up of layers: a long sleeve tee, chinos or jeans, boots and vest. There's a really great vest in the October Style Vault you can buy. Make sure your t-shirt isn't pilled and stained, and your jeans fit you well. Those 2 things go a long way in keeping you looking pulled together.

As the morning sun warms the day, you'll lose the layers. Which means your t-shirt needs to be a good t-shirt because it is now the statement (especially if you skipped the jewelry to get out the door).

Boots are your sneaker alternative. Because you may not have time to run home and change before your next stop, and if you're wearing boots I know you're not wearing yoga pants to all the birthday parties, lunches, fall festivals, etc. the rest of the day. October Style Vault update: shop a flat, tall suede brown boot just added to the Style Notes. Under $150! You want your boots to be pretty sleek, not that much hardware on them. Look for our upcoming blog on boots to learn more!

2. Afternoon Birthday Parties/Lunch/Fall Festival/Shopping Your Favorite Neighborhood Boutiques

A day like this calls for comfy clothes and flats. You need an updated pair of jeans and a great jacket. Layering again, so you can carry your jacket or throw it in the backseat when it gets warm, but you'll still have it later for when the sun goes down. I've got great jeans and leather and suede jackets in the October Style Vault that have been hugely popular this month. This kind of jacket is the perfect layering piece that can be thrown on over a sheath for work, or with jeans on a Saturday. That's because it's a neutral and not too exaggerated of a trend.

And your flats better not be ballet flats. Everyone thought ballet flats were such a great idea, but no, they're not. They provide no support and they look like little girl's shoes. That's why you need an almond toe or pointy toe flat.

3. Night Out On The Town

What makes an outfit evening-ready is really all about the shoes. We have a special category for this when we're shopping for clients, "the going-out shoe," that can, yes, be worn with jeans or with a dressy dress. I am really into wearing my silk pants at night with either a silk blouse or a sweater.

In late summer I was wearing a silk shell under a black waistcoat (ok, ok, a vest) and now I'm wearing a long sleeve blouse or a thin sweater. Want some silk pants? I added 2 great pairs to the September Style Vault, Style Notes section: a traditional silk pant and an edgier pair. Both are great and still available. If you have some lurking in your closet, they may be candidates for altering. If they are a sidezip, look for a contoured waistband - if yes, then they're worth saving (otherwise they will make your bum look loooong and big). You can also always narrow the leg for a more modern cut.

Here you can see I'm wearing the same pants with a longer silk blouse that is on the looser side. And I'm wearing a close toe grey suede pump I featured in the May Bonus Issue of the Style Vault. They re-cut it and it's available again for fall!

4. Sunday Morning Service and Brunch

I grew up going to a church that was quite fancy. I loved it then because I spent so much time in a school uniform it was nice to have a reason to wear something else. Now, even though I still LOVE clothes, I have way more on my mind and just want to be easy and comfortable. Enter the sweater dress. And a leather jacket. And boots. Can go to a formal church or a long, relaxing brunch with family or friends.

Grey with cognac is like my favorite color combination, next to white with white. Do you remember the number one rule for wearing leather? It must be fitted. Not skanky tight, just fitted. And that necklace? It's a special piece made by cousin Somers Randolph, a sculptor in Santa Fe. He turns his miniature casts for large sculptures into beautiful pieces of jewelry, like this pendant. Find one good piece (or a few) and wear it all the time!

Flat boots are the best. And the more you wear them, the better they get. If they fit nicely around your calves, you can even wear them under bootcut jeans, and of course you can tuck skinny jeans into them.
