How To Wear White Jeans (and other summer staples) After Labor Day

Tina, here.

So is it Fall yet?  Kind of.

How To Wear White (Jeans) After Labor Day

Can it pleeeeease be time for jackets already?!

Let’s be real. It’s still hot during the day even if it’s cooler in the mornings and evenings (yippee!).  Makes it very difficult to know how to dress.  You have questions like Can I still wear white jeans after Labor Day? What about my cork sandals?  Sundresses? (They look great with a denim jacket over them.) Is it too early for my leather pants?  Or my boots?  Here is your guide to what you can and can’t wear after Labor Day.

1. You can still wear white jeans.

Pair white jeans with warm neutrals like caramel and grey tops, or a denim shirt, rather than your cooler, sunburst color t’s and tops. And if you still hold onto that antiquated notion that you can't wear white after Labor Day, hello, it's 2015.

White Jeans For Summer

Here's a summer palette for your white jeans. Time to switch it up: the key to wearing white, and white jeans, post-Labor Day is to add autumnal tones rather than cool spring tones. Seems obvious, but I like to point out the obvious so you can give yourself a pat on the back for already knowing these fashion rules and nuances. Think white with grey, brown, deep eggplants and camel instead of bright pinks, coral and cool mint. Plaid works, too.

Let’s drive this point home a bit further….

Here’s "summer" with white jeans:

White jeans

Citrus colors + white = summer.

And here are the same white jeans done up for fall:

Earth tones + white = fall.

Keep your accessories in warm neutrals, too. I wear this caramel patent clutch and horn cuff year round, but when paired with other earth tones, they contribute to an overall warm, autumnal look.

Another white jeans for fall look. My pink tees are packed away and I've started wearing my browns and grey's with white jeans.

Black and white is year round. I've paired mine here with a camel shoe for a more fall-ish approach. Deidre is the one in the ripped jeans in case you thought I think it's ok for us ladies in our 40's to wear them (I don't ha).

2. You can still wear your wedges, but pair them with fall colors.

Summer Accessories

A hot pink clutch and crochet wedges might be fine on their own this fall with, say, dark denim, but definitely not with white jeans which scream summer.

Fall Accessories

Here's that caramel clutch again and brown wedges. Patent is year round now, by the way. And because the rope on these wedges is brown, they would work well into fall, especially with white jeans. There are some really great fall wedges inside the September Style Vault, and the bonus issue, the Perfect Fall Shoe Wardrobe. Wide's and narrow's, too!

Animal print heels

Start wearing your animal print shoes. They are such a classic, and on trend this season. An animal print accessory can really make your white jeans pop. I found some of the best styles out there this season (heels and flats), and members can shop them from the Style Vault this month! If you're not a member, you can join today. What service can you get that's cheaper than netflix that will put the best modern fashion at your fingertips? Get exclusive deals inside you won't find anywhere else.

3. Have we talked this week yet about chambray? I didn't think so, so here you go. Wear your chambray shirt with white jeans.

Then wear it with dark rinse jeans (if you dare) when it gets cooler. But not with faded rinse jeans, mkay cupcakes?

Chambray is thinner than denim, and softer. So it's perfect for fall. And I LOVE it with white jeans. A chambray shirt is one of the 12 modern must-haves inside our September Style Vault. Shop it today if you're member.

What falls into the category of "it's too early to wear this fall"?

1. It’s too early for your leather jacket.

Unless it is a lightweight suede or light leather, and it’ s not making everyone else around you sweat just to look at you.  Your black moto jacket may just be too much visually this time of year – wait til October or the first chill hits.

2. It’s too early for your winter boots.

There are some boots that are year round, like ankle boots and cowboy boots, and even some knee boots. But hold off on the heavy black and dark brown suede boots for now.

White After Labor Day

These buff colored boots work with a white denim skirt in early fall. A dark brown might feel too heavy til it gets a bit cooler.

3. It’s too early for fur.  Duh.
