Let's Just Wear Caftans

Tina, here.

Is it ridiculous to think we could all wear caftans, à la C.Z. Guest or Marella Agnelli, lounging with a cocktail by a pool, or strolling down an Italian strada, popping in and out of the milliner's or cobbler's? Yes, that is ridiculous because no one does any of those things on a regular summer afternoon... except we can wear caftans. Where would you wear such a thing, you wonder? Well, I say just wear one, somewhere, anywhere, because, (1) it will look amazing on you and, (2) you'll actually distinguish yourself as a lady who "gets dressed" to go out, unlike the hordes of people who appear more and more undressed in public. Mark my words, the tide will turn and the pendulum will swing in the other direction, in time. We can only hope it's soon and very soon, and that ladylike, quiet luxury is in vogue once again. Not stiff and prudish in the manner of hiding the feminine physique, but proper dress by day and by night, ("... use the corresponding face with the corresponding emotion. Happy, smile! Sad, frown!" ~ French Kiss), the quiet display of logos, if even at all, and tasteful no matter what your style is (you see, quiet luxury is not necessarily expensive but it is tasteful). I digress. Back to caftans.

You know who brought the caftan to the masses? Mrs. Roper. I love the democratization of fashion, but somehow the stylish caftan drifted into the dowdy housedress.

A caftan is not a housedress. A caftan is very likely "one size fits all," long and flowy, but not too flowy, and of a lightweight fabric like linen or silk. I think they look great at the beach or in the mountains, but why not wear one to book club? Just pass it off as being hot and not wanting to wear something that touches you.
