Core Wardrobe: Wear Your White In Winter

I don't know what it is about February but I start craving color. Bright sorbet colors for my sweaters, pink polish on my nails, pink gloss on my lips and blue hydrangeas in my living room. I guess I've been wearing my camels and charcoal greys for too long and I'm ready for a spin on the color wheel. One thing we do over and over for our in-town clients is to show them how to wear almost every item in their closets in multiple seasons. Which is why you need a few core wardrobe staples as your building blocks, like the white jeans I'm using today - in winter, mind you. You get more bang for your buck for each piece, and you feel like you have 3 times the amount of clothes when we show you how to wear everything with everything else.

Here's how I wear white jeans with color during the spring and summer months: with white jeans. Now, how do you wear white jeans in winter? With the same colors, just different textures and fabrics.

I don't want to look too springy in February, though, so I've got to walk the line carefully. To wear the sorbet colors I'm craving in the dead of winter, you need, yes that's right, white, as the perfect foil for all that sweetness. And white jeans to be more specific. In fact, whether you're wearing white jeans with pastels, silvery greys or a crisp black and white Chanel palette, white jeans and winter go together like Christian and Dior.

Here is how to wear white jeans this winter.

1. Wear white jeans with sorbet-colored cashmere in late winter, rather than with your chocolate browns and deep reds.

You may think it's odd that I crave color at all since I'm addicted to white, but once or twice a year I do want pretty color in my life. I usually go to turquoise and coral. I like paler tones of these colors in late winter and stronger saturations in warmer months.

Texture and fabric content make cooler, sorbet colors feel seasonally appropriate in winter months, like this cable-knit cashmere sweater.

An animal print flat is another nod to the it's-still-winter season.

2. Wear white jeans with pale, silvery grey in late winter, rather than with charcoal grey and brown.

If white is my favorite "color," grey might be my second favorite. I dive into deep, rich charcoal greys in fall, and by late winter I'm ready for lighter shades like dove grey and silver.

You'll notice I'm wearing both gold and silver jewelry together. Hopefully you're just as ok with that as you are with wearing white after Labor Day and before Easter, since it's 2016 and all. :)

Good little reminder to keep those sleeves pushed up on your arms to bare those pretty, dainty wrists of yours.

3. Wear white jeans with crisp black for a timeless look all winter long.

Black and white is as good in high summer as it is in high winter. It's just good. That's all.

In summer, I may do the black and white look with a column of white (white jeans with a white tee under a black blazer); but in winter I'll do a black underpinning under a black blazer or sweater with white jeans.

Keep your shoes neutral, too. Nothing too jarring peeping out from under a white pant. Nude is a great choice.
