Quiet Luxury and New Winter Must-Haves

Tina, here.

Sometimes it's absolutely delightful, and even necessary to lift our spirits, to unabashedly wear something rakish without reserve. But my goodness, it has been a struggle for the typical shopper to find what I would call tasteful clothes. Which only makes the hunt for the hard-to-find for my clients more thrilling, and the spoils of war, when dragged home, more treasured. My mission to find beautiful clothes that are both special and wearable in real life, timeless and au courant, not too expensive and not tawdry, keeps me going. The hunt! In a word (actually two), it's quiet luxury. Quiet, good taste. Quiet luxury lasts, and never goes out of style.

So what is a quiet luxury wardrobe?

(Most of what I wear I've had for years ~ my philosophy is buy what you love and keep wearing it, adding a few fun trends each season to keep it fresh and multiply outfits. As always, scroll down for lots of outfit ideas you can copy or update what you have.)

Quiet luxury, first of all, is not necessarily expensive, and it certainly is not exclusive. It's carrying your grandmother's Italian leather pocketbook (I miss this word!) she could've as easily purchased on her honeymoon as she could have found in the church rummage sale. The point is, quality was more ubiquitous back then, which is why there is still so much great vintage on the market instead of in the trash heap. Quality is timeless. It's also about value. Fewer but better. But not necessarily more expensive. I remember hearing my sister say she wanted to raise her girls to know the "value of a dollar." So wise. (And I'd say she succeeded.) Actually, all my nieces adore scouting the rows of TJ Maxx for high end finds as much as I do! I'm such a proud aunt.

Winter Must-Haves

For a quiet, luxurious, cozy winter wardrobe that does not consist only of fleece leggings and down jackets (yes, I have several of these), but to keep it classy, the must-haves are cashmere layers in soft neutrals, a smart blazer, stretch pants (mine are suede) and pops of color with accessories like wraps and jewelry. Now, come February, I'll be craving bright Spring color and you'll see me in pink sweaters with white jeans and booties. But these are the makings of a "quiet luxury" winter wardrobe.

I like the look of an ankle bootie under a cropped ankle pant, as long as no skin is showing. In cold weather, it's sometimes the only way to wear your ankle pants.
