What Should I Wear To Steeplechase? You Get To Vote!

Tina, here.

Did you leave a nosegay on the doorstep of your love yesterday? That's the tradition for May Day, you know. May is one of my favorite months, as I'm sure it is for you, too. School's almost out, the peonies are in bloom and it finally feels like summer. Bring on the lemonade stands and cutoff shorts (kidding). But it's also known as a frantic month with class parties, graduations, weddings, showers, preparing to leave town and lots of gift buying. And LOTS of wardrobe changes.

In Nashville, we have this grand tradition called the Iroquois Steeplechase. It's a day of horse racing and hat wearing and so much madras plaid and Lilly Pulitzer you can't see straight. I thought this year I'd ask you all to help me decide what outfit to wear!

Dolls, what should I wear this year? Here are the choices.

Steeplechase

On the left, a white, and you're gonna fall off your chair when you read this, jumpsuit. With fringe. And a black tophat with netting. Or, on the right, splashy floral palazzo pants (not Lilly) with a vintage white waistcoat (oh ok fine, vest). And a big ole happy hat.

As long as I've been going to Steeplechase (practically my whole life) I've gone with the non-traditional anti-garden party theme for my outfit. I usually am in my western glam garb or some kind of "I wish I lived in Paris and dressed so chic every day" outfit. I've worn a white crochet dress (waaay before they were "in") with a straw hat I got in a vintage shop in Paris, a side-falling coffee colored skirt with a rough leather belt and tons of turquoise jewelry and the coolest cowgirl hat you've seen (with a rose on it), and I've even done Hunter boots (the muddy year) with a solid black sundress that had a really cool shape. But this year I'm feeling more garden-party than usual.

Floral pallazo pants

These palazzo pants come the closest to Steeplechase-appropriate clothing I've ever worn. But they're pants. So I could be hot. Keep that in mind.

I love hydrangeas and these do remind me of the Lilly pants my grandmother wore with big lions or sunflowers or alligators on them.

Spring florals

Sunglasses are a must. And subtle jewelry since the pants are quite loud.

I got the hat at TJ Maxx years ago. You can find a similar one here.  And check for even more fab hat options inside the Style Vault.

white silk jumpsuit

Now for the all-white jumpsuit. Pros are it's fun. It's got fringe that looks so pretty when you move. And it's white. The cons are, it's white.

It also needs to be altered before wearing, and that's a pain as we all know. It's sooooo long. But ladies, alterations is a way of life. Get used to it. It's not just for so-called hard-to-fit women. I just like to make this point every so often so you don't forget.

silk fringe

Isn't that fringe so fun! I could twirl and create this effect all day. A great party trick.

tophat

My hat is by Cha's Cha's. I discovered this hatmaker years ago at a little shop outside Nashville called Haven. I own 3 of their hats. They are really special. Our Style Vault Insiders just enjoyed an exclusive 20% discount off a hat from Cha Cha's! It pays to join and save.

So I need your help, pretty please. How can you vote? Go to our Facebook or Instagram page (or both please!) and cast your vote.
