Summer sales offer a great opportunity to snatch up that cute dress you can use for next year's spring wedding, or a sandal you know will be fabulous for your winter getaway to the beach. But of course, there are a few guidelines to keep in mind when shopping the end of season sales. Don't buy anything you don't love, love, love no matter how far down it's been marked on sale. As my grandmother taught me, don't spend money to save money.

Next, and hang with me here for a minute, don't buy trend items on sale at the end of the season. I do champion the purchase of a trend item on sale at the beginning of the season, but not at the end. Who knows (well, we do) if that trend will look dated next year when you bring it out to wear for the first time? There's a good chance another trend has bubbled up over the long winter to replace whatever hot look you bought into last year.

So this is why we love a good trend on sale at the beginning of the season when you have all season to wear it, but not at the end. And, notice we're using the words trend and on sale in the same conversation - don't overspend on a trend, ever!

Another guidepost for you while shopping the summer sales: I always look for items I can wear into fall, too. Like this denim jacket. How great is this wash? I love the ruggedness/preppiness of it. It will carry this off-the-shouder dress into fall, and make the pink chinos look a bit more September-ish than Easter egg-ish, too. And how about these grey suede sandals! This stacked heel, or block heel, is genius. You get more stability than a stiletto. But just make sure they don't get too chunky. And the narrow ankle strap is situated perfectly on the narrowest part of the ankle for the most flattering fit. Any wider, lower or higher and you'd have the dreaded kankle. This metallic v-neck sweater will look beautiful with white jeans now, and into fall with faded jeans or the chinos, and then as it gets cooler, add a scarf for warmth. And three cheers for the ivory kimono! It comes in black, too. Might want to buy both.

Items are selling fast at these prices!

Style tip: Neutral colors extend a wardrobe and are major players when transitioning a bright summer wardrobe into the warmer tones of fall.
