The end of January means two things. One, our chance of snow diminishes. Booo. Two, January Sales. Yay! But buyer beware. Stores want your money. Here's how to spend it, how not to, and my picks for what to buy now. But first...

How to Shop the January Winter Sales

Fashion is a fickle mistress. And sales can be overwhelming. Do something for me, will you? Walk into your closet and count all the pieces with tags still attached, and then count all the pieces you haven't worn in a few seasons. Now add up the amount you spent on these "gems" you had to have but never saw the light of day. Feeling a bit queasy? Don't fret, I'm about to save you loads of money going forward if you heed these warnings. And you'll never have buyer's remorse again.

1. Never spend money to save money.

Ladybugs, first rule is you must not compromise on the good taste I have taught you. Ask yourself, do I LOVE it? If your answer is, but it's such a great deal!, drop it and leave it. If you didn't want it at full price, why would you buy it now when you only half-heartedly want it because it's cheap? A $100 pair of shoes you passed on the first time, that's now on sale for $50 is a waste of $50 and $$ you could have put towards a better pair you really, really, really wanted. Don't lower your standards.

2. If it doesn't fit, don't buy it.

...unless you have (a) a good tailor and (b) you have the time to take it there for a fitting, and (c) the additional cash it will take to make it fit perfectly. Hems are inexpensive. Cutting into shoulders and waistlines can be pricey. Fit is first.

3. Don't buy into trends on sale at the end of the season.

Because they will be out of style next season, and they'll gather dust in your closet and sneer at you every time you look at them. Great sale purchases are classic pieces that you'll wear again next year because they won't be off-trend. Fewer but better.
